Mission
The mission of the New Mexico Gay Men’s Chorus is to foster a vibrant, inclusive community through the power of music, celebrating the rich diversity of the LGBTQ+ community and our state. We are dedicated to creating a space where everyone feels valued and heard, using our performances to challenge stereotypes and promote equality. By embracing our shared humanity and expressing our collective experiences, we aim to inspire, uplift, and unite audiences while advancing social justice and acceptance. Through song and harmony, we strive to build bridges of understanding and support, enriching both our members and the broader community.
Motto
Our motto is Changing the World Through Music, and through our works of silliness, passion, faith, beauty, and emotion, we try to demonstrate that we are all on the same journey. This year we ask you to join us as we share our musical talents in Albuquerque and Santa Fe.
History
NMGMC was formed in September 1981 as one of the country’s first gay men’s choruses. Initially called The Brash Ensemble, the group was formed with the help of Common Bond, a volunteer nonprofit gay and lesbian community organization. The initial 15 members have now grown to a roster of up to 70 singing members.
In August 1987, the group changed its name to the New Mexico Gay Men’s Chorus to reflect its identity as an openly gay men’s chorus with a membership that comes from various New Mexico communities. Today we rehearse in Albuquerque and have had singing members who live in Albuquerque, Corrales, Grants, Los Lunas, Milan, Placitas, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe, and Valencia.
NMGMC has performed in scores of venues in addition to our seasonal concerts. We appeared in the movie “Hamlet 2” and have sung with the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, the New Mexico Philharmonic, and Opera Southwest. The Chorus has appeared at LGBTQ+ and non-gay community, governmental, non-profit, and human rights events including the Santa Fe Opera, Isotopes and NM United games, AIDS memorial services, AIDS Memorial Quilt viewings, interfaith services, and Pride Festivals in Albuquerque, Taos, Las Vegas, Los Ranchos, and Santa Fe. NMGMC has performed concerts throughout New Mexico as well as Arizona, Colorado, Minnesota, Texas, and Florida.
NMGMC was one of the first choruses in the country to become a member of the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA). To date, the Chorus has performed at seven GALA Festivals including the GALA in Minneapolis in July 2024.
Our talented and amazing outreach ensemble continues to perform for various groups throughout the area.
Our motto is Changing the World through Music. Our mission is to reduce homophobia and intolerance and create a positive image of the LGBTQ+ community through high-quality public musical performances. Through our works of passion, faith, beauty, silliness, and emotion, we strive to demonstrate that we are all on the same journey.
