Scammers Targeting Arts Institutions
Legality of Third-Party Ticket Sales
Ongoing Issue and Mitigation Efforts
How Can You Help?
- There have been a number of scammers targeting the NHCC (National Hispanic Cultural Center) and other arts institutions in the state including the KiMo, Revel, Santa Fe Opera, and Sandia Casino.
- These scammers are setting up as third-party ticket sellers and using sponsored ads on platforms like Google and Facebook to appear as the top search results when people look for tickets.
- Patrons are falling victim to these scam third-party websites, either paying exorbitant prices or being deterred from attending events altogether.
Legality of Third-Party Ticket Sales
- Third-party ticket sales for arts organizations are not illegal in the state of New Mexico.
- There are laws against scalping and overpricing for college sports and boxing, but these do not cover the arts.
Ongoing Issue and Mitigation Efforts
- Patrons are falling victim to these scam third-party websites, either paying exorbitant prices or being deterred from attending events altogether.
- The venues are doing what they can to mitigate the problem, but it is an ongoing issue.
- The NHCC, as a state institution, has lawyers helping them navigate this situation.
How Can You Help?
- We are asking for help in spreading the word to patrons to only purchase tickets directly from the venue's website to avoid being scammed.
- If you see a third-party app or website, please report it.
- For the NHCC, call 505-724-4771.
