The New Mexico Gay Men’s Chorus is a proud member of and was one of the first choruses to become a member of the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses, Inc. (GALA Choruses).
Founded in 1982, GALA Choruses is now the leading association committed to serving the GLBT choral movement. Today, there are over 180 member choruses located throughout Australia, Europe, North America, South America and South Africa. The association includes almost 10,000 vocalists singing as male, female and mixed (male & female) ensembles in a wide variety of styles.
As an international association of GLBT choruses, its mission is to inspire and strengthen member choruses; to change their world through song. GALA Choruses is open to all GLBT and GLBT-allied choruses.
Through workshops, festivals and ongoing networking and administrative support services, GALA Choruses fosters the continued artistic and organizational growth of its member choruses.
Every four years, GALA Choruses hosts the largest GLBT choral festival in the world. These festivals play a very significant role in the lives of GLBT choruses and their members. Over the several days of the festival, each chorus presents a short program to an audience consisting of other GLBT chorus members. Some of these choruses are quite large with a hundred or more members and budgets to match, while others are smaller but no less committed to their mission.
By fostering the artistic and organizational development of member choruses through a wide variety of programs and services, GALA Choruses produces choral festivals, educational conferences and several publications. It engages in advocacy; provides grants for the commissioning of new choral works; facilitates networking within the Association; and serves as a resource center for choruses and individual Associates from around the world.
