We are Mariachi Orgullo de Nuevo Mexico. As far as we know we are the first mixed all gay and lesbian mariachi in the world. We were formed in August of 2006 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Many of us have been together in other groups in the past or have played under the same directors. Over the past few years we have become good friends. It began as just a bit of a joke - saying we should start the first all gay mariachi, knowing of course that many would not agree with this step. The more we joked about it the better it sounded. Why not? Too many times we let others determine what we think of ourselves. Why shouldn't we be out and not only proud of ourselves but of our culture as well? So here we are. Not to be out in everyone's face, but doing what we love and not hiding who we are. Making great music, making great friends, and hopefully making a difference.
