May I sit in on a rehearsal prior to my audition? Absolutely. Prior to auditioning, candidates are encouraged to sit-in on a regular rehearsal to personally experience the fun and demands of NMGMC membership. What to Expect at the Audition: You do not have to sing in front of the whole chorus or a group of judges. You will chat a little with the Artistic Director, sing some scales to warm-up to determine the range of your voice, and follow the Artistic Director through a series of vocal exercises. You might be asked to sight-read a (very!) simple piece of music, and may be given an exercise to test your ability to hear and reproduce different pitch sequences.

You do not need to prepare a song or bring any music, and there is no formal written music test. You do not have to know how to read music, but at a minimum, it helps to be able to follow your voice line. Any previous music experience is a plus. No need to bring a resume. Overall, the whole process should not take more than 10 minutes. The Artistic Director will help you feel comfortable and at ease for your audition.

Do I have to “re-audition” if I have sung in the chorus before? The answer to that question is yes! Even current chorus members will be asked to re-audition from time to time. In order to make sure that everyone is in the correct section and singing well, the Artistic Director periodically needs to hear everyone in an audition setting.

The Fifth Section is a vital part of our Chorus. Those who do not perform onstage perform a variety of tasks offstage including, but not limited to, ticket sales and collection, advertising, set-up, tear-down, ushering, and intermission activities.
