Location: Auditions are held at the Immanuel Presbyterian Church at the corner of Carlisle and Silver in Nob Hill. This is also where we rehearse.

May I sit in on a rehearsal prior to my audition? Absolutely. Prior to auditioning, candidates are encouraged to sit-in on a regular rehearsal to personally experience the fun and demands of NMGMC membership. If you are interested in sitting-in on a rehearsal prior to auditioning, please contact the Artistic Director at director@nmgmc.org.

What to Expect at the Audition: The only people in the room will be you and NMGMC’s Artistic Director. You do not have to sing in front of the whole chorus or a group of judges. You will chat a little, sing some scales to warm-up and determine the range of your voice, sing a familiar song – usually “My Country ‘Tis of Thee,” and follow the Artistic Director through a series of vocal exercises. You will be asked to sight-read a (very!) simple piece of music, and may be given an exercise to test your ability to hear and reproduce different pitch sequences.

You do not need to prepare a song or bring any music, and there is no formal written music test. You do not have to know how to read music, but at a minimum, it helps to be able to follow your voice line. Any previous music experience is a plus. No need to bring a resume. Overall, the whole process should not take more than half an hour. The Artistic Director will help you feel comfortable and at ease for your audition. You will be notified of the audition outcome several days later by email.

Do I have to “re-audition” if I have sung in the chorus before? The answer to that question is yes! Even current chorus members will be asked to re-audition from time to time. In order to make sure that everyone is in the correct section and singing well, the Artistic Director periodically needs to hear everyone in an audition setting.
