The New Mexico Gay Men's Chorus is thrilled to announce auditions for vocal soloists for our spring performances of Andrew Lippa's "Unbreakable".
A New Mexico premiere from the creator of I Am Harvey Milk, Andrew Lippa’s Unbreakable is a dramatic and emotional history lesson that brings to light some of the gay experiences and champions in the United States over the last century.
Unbreakable is a 14 movement choral and orchestral work that serves as a dramatic and emotional lesson of the last 100 years of LGBT history. We learn about some lesser known gay icons such as Jane Adams(co-founder of the ACLU), Cyril B. Wilcox (Harvard student thrown out for gay associations), Gertrude Stein (famous writer, unabashed lesbian), Bayard Rustin (civil rights activist, ostracized for being gay), and Sylvia Rivera (fiery gay and transgender activist).
We are looking for 4 strong vocalists who are comfortable with acting. The music is very theatrical, and our soloists must be able to sing in the style called for in each song. Experience in music theatre is strongly desirable.
Woman 1 - young (20s-30s), woman of color, mezzo who can belt but also be comfortable with the mixed range.
Woman 2 - older (40s-50s), soprano
Man 1 - young (20s-30s), man of color, tenor
Man 2 - older (40s-50s) baritone/tenor
All candidates are asked to prepare a song of their own choice, that highlights their strengths as a vocalist, and similar to the style of Unbreakable.
Candidates will also be asked to sing excerpts of Unbreakable as part of their audition. Music will be provided.
Performances of Unbreakable will be:
Thursday March 26, 7:30pm at The Lensic in Santa Fe
Saturday April 4, 7:30pm at The National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque
Sunday April 5, 7:30pm at The National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque
These are paid positions with a contract provided.
